The Power of a Hug: Where Science Meets the Soul

A hug.
So simple. So free.
And yet, one of the most powerful medicines we have.
In a world that is always rushing, we often forget how much healing can happen in silence, through presence, through connection, through something as basic as holding another human being.
When I hug someone, I hold them for 20 seconds. Not because it sounds poetic, but because science has shown that something remarkable happens around that time. After about 20 seconds, our bodies begin to release oxytocin, known as the “love hormone.” It lowers stress, slows the heart rate, strengthens the immune system, and creates a sense of safety and belonging.
It is the body’s way of saying, “You are safe. You are loved. You are home.”
Spiritually, I have come to see hugging as more than a gesture. It is an energetic exchange, a merging of hearts, a wordless prayer. When two people truly embrace, the mind softens, the armor melts, and the soul remembers its oneness with another. In that moment, healing happens beyond words.
Sometimes we hesitate to hug. We keep our distance. We wait for the right moment.
But often, all someone needs is that, a genuine embrace, to feel seen, to feel held, to feel loved.
And sometimes, we do not realize the power of a hug until it is too late, until the person is no longer here to hold.
That is why I hug fully.
When I hold someone, I hold them with the awareness that this moment may never come again.
Because one day, I may close my eyes and remember that embrace, and I will be grateful that I took those extra few seconds to hold on.
So hug longer.
Hug deeper.
Let your heart speak where words fall short.
Because a hug is not just physical. It is a moment where two souls remember they are not alone.
